Poquoson is a town in Prince Edward County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Petersburg-Manassas-Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. Poquoson's name comes from Potosi Creek which flows through the town. The first permanent settlers in Poquoson were James and Elizabeth Cook who arrived in 1775 and built a cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1802, Captain John Smith discovered potash and lime near present day Poquoson and decided to establish a small trading post there to sell these materials. In 1815, Captain Abraham Van Buren founded the manorial court of Poquoson Manor where he ruled over all land within the boundaries of modern day Poquoson Township. In 1851 Poquoson becamethe first incorporated city in Virginia when its charter was approved by the General Assembly. At that time it had a population of around 14,000 people. During World War II Poquoson played an important role as a munitions plant outputting ammunition for the war effort in both England and America. After the war, Poquoson experienced rapid growth with influxes of new residents coming to take advantage of new opportunities such as education and job opportunities unmatched anywhere else in Virginia at that time. The town of Poquoson was founded in 1760 by James Ogle and his wife Susannah. The first settlers were farmers, but the town rapidly became a trading center for the surrounding area. In 1814, Poquoson was incorporated as a village. On July 4, 1861, Poquoson became part of the Commonwealth of Virginia and was renamed Richmond.
