Since the Revolutionary War, Marines have been deployed to fight in many places around the world. One of the earliest deployments was to Radford, Virginia in 1775. The town was host to a Marine detachment from Portsmouth, New Hampshire that took part in the local militia during the American Revolution. In 1802, Marines were stationed at Quantico Naval Base and fought in a number of engagements against Spanish forces. From 1815-1820, Marines served as garrison troops at Norfolk Naval Station. During this time they also developed into an effective unit for amphibious warfare and became known as "The Fighting Marins." In 1865, Marines responded to Confederate General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. They played a significant role in cleaning up what remained of Richmond following the battle. The unit disbanded after the war but its legacy lives on through Marine Corps Reserve units today that are based in various locations around the world including Japan and Australia

Radford, Virginia is a small town located in the Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. Radford is part of the Frederick County seat and it has a rich history dating back to 1701 when the area was part of Prince George's County. In 1861, after the American Civil War ended, Radford became part of West Virginia and its residents were relocated to what is now Monongalia County. However, many residents continued to live in Radford until around 1970 when it became an incorporated municipality. Today, Radford remains a small town with a strong community spirit that promotes education and innovation. The first settlers in what are now Radford and Monongalia Counties were Native Americans who arrived during the early 16th century. By 1701, they had hired Englishman Captain John Smith to explore this new land which he named "New Town." After exploring for several months, Smith reported that he found nothing but "a great plain" on which he could build his own home. He also shipped some goods back home with him and began construction on his new settlement - likely called New Town because it was located near present-day Radford University (then known as West Virginia State College). In 1846, when West Virginia become part of Kentucky following the admission of that state into the United States, most of what is now Monongalia County remained within Kentucky's borders. However, some people from Kentucky decided to move into this new county and form a community called Friendship Heights which still exists today. The Marine Corps has a rich history that can be traced back to 1775 when Colonel George Washington organized the first Continental Marines. In 1898, during World War I, the United States Marine Corps was created as an emergency arm of the military to provide support for American forces fighting in Europe. The Marines continue to serve in various roles today; from combat marines who fight on land and sea, to aviation marines who operate aircrafts. Some of the more well-known Marines include Unit 61949 which is credited with saving Dutch Harbor from Japanese occupation during World War II; John F. Kennedy’s personal bodyguard; and 2nd Lieutenant Tommy Hilfiger who became known as “the modern day marine” after leading a team that helped win the 1984 U.S. Olympic gold medal in track and field. The Marine Corps has always been associated with service and sacrifice, both on land and at sea. One of the most popular annual traditions within the Marine family is Christmas Party which happens every December in honor of all our fallen soldiers (and civilians) throughout history including those serving in Operation Desert Storm/Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom etc..
