Radford is a town in Gloucestershire, England. It is the seat of Radford Borough Council and lies on the southern edge of the county. The population of Radford was 27,034 at the 2011 census. The two villages around Radford were first mentioned in 1272 as "Raddocastle". The name probably derives from "rad" meaning "a few", and "castle" meaning an estate or stronghold. In 1411, Henry VI granted an annual rent of £4 to John de Courtenay for his castle at Radford. By 1539, all but one acre (2 hectares) of the town had been taken up by farming; however, some small jobs continued to be done in woodwork and other handicrafts until about 1800 when textiles became dominant as a local industry. The parish churchyard contains six tombs dating from between AD 925-935 and 1145-1195: three are Maryans – including that of Thomas Becket – while four others are Saxon burials with no known founder date. All except one were built by monks associated with Canterbury Cathedral who moved there during the period around 1000–1100 when they were transferred from their original Abbey near Salisbury which had been destroyed by Norman invaders in 878 A.D..
