Suffolk, Virginia is a small town in Harrisonburg County, Virginia. The population was 3,827 at the 2010 census. It was founded on December 10, 1788 by Captain John Smith and his men as part of the larger colony of New Hanover. Suffolk became an independent district on February 12, 1801 and the current form of government took place on March 4th that same year with James Madison being chosen as its first Mayor. On December 7th 1861, during the American Civil War Suffolk sided with Confederate States of America and destruction began throughout their towns and farms. By 1865 all but two out of thirteen plantations were destroyed including one belonging to General Robert Ewell which led to Mr. Everett's suggestion for incorporation into Harrisonburg County in 1866 when no other offers were received from other towns within the county limits. The only slave household left in Suffolk after 1860 was that of Mrs. Greenlaw who raised nine slaves until her death in 1875; four of these slaves continued to work for her until their sale in 1906 to a plantation in North Carolina
