Williamsburg is a town in Albemarle County, Virginia, United States. The population was 7,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlottesville metropolitan area. Williamsburg has been home to the University of Virginia since 1734 and was also a site of the Battle of Saratoga in 1813. The first permanent English settlement in what is now Albemarle County was made by Captain John Smith on July 24, 1607 when he founded Jamestown on James River within present-day Williamsburg. In 1624–25 two more settlements were made: Dunmore's Valley and Westover. By 1656 all three had been abandoned due to Native American attacks, but English settlers continued to create new posts throughout the region because of its strategic location at points where trade routes passed through or beyond the original English colony of Jamestown. In 1734, after Colonel George Washington's arrival as commander-in-chief of British forces in North America and while Williamsburg was still under British control, General William Howe decided that instead of surrendering his army at Saratoga he would move it northeastward into what is now York County and establish a new capital there called Loudoun City which would be better situated for operations against the French and Spanish invaders who had recently invaded Canada. So Howe ordered Major Thomas Graves to build Fort Necessity near present day Petersburg on October 14, 1734; this fort served as an important military stronghold until 1814 when it fell to Richmond soldiers under Beauregard during the Siege of Petersburg (1814). After leaving England in 1765, Colonial Governor Robert Dinwiddie built a series of forts along both sides of Potomac River between Point Lookout and Alexandria pending an attack by France which never came; theseforts served as bases for Dinwiddie's troops during their campaigns against Native Americans such as those led by Virginian General Amelia Earhart in 1775–76 known collectively as "War For India". However no action was taken against France until September 10, 1800 when Commodore John Paul Jones discovered French fishing vessels off Point Lookout with supplies bound for Quebec City; Jones directed his squadron led by Commodore Nicholas Biddle to take care of them without letting them get too close so that they could be captured intact. This action became known as "theBattle Of Latitude 39°05' N" (November 12, 1800). On November 9th Caroline arrived back from England with news that her husband Prince Frederick had died suddenly while hunting near Hengstville Manor outside modern Williamsburg; this provided fresh impetus for King George III's desire to retake London from France and begin negotiations for independence from Great Britain which eventually succeeded On January 3rd 1801 Prince Frederick received notification from his father Leopold I that he will succeed him As King Of Bohemia & Moravia And jointly rule with his mother Princess Charlotte Amalieborgen & her husband Duke Karl Ludwig Friedrich Wilhelm II age 53 years old living at Lnějov nad Labem Castle near Olomouc HereditaryPrince Ferdinand Ernst Ferdinand Maximilian Joseph Emanuel Franz Joseph Anton Joseph Leopold Freiherr von Württemberg graced us with his presence here today giving us His Royal Highness' sanction theretofore unknown!
