The Coast Guard gift history in Williamsburg, Virginia dates back to 1917. The first gift was a life jacket to the Coast Guard Auxiliary. In 1961, the Coast Guard plaque was installed in honor of Commodore David E. Cooke and his wife Mrs. Evelyn J. Cooke who died in 1965 during the Vietnam War. Commodore Cooke is also honored with a life-sized bronze statue at the entrance of the Williamsburg Marina. In 1988, a new Commandant's House was built on land owned by the City of Richmond and dedicated to Commodore Cooke and Mrs. Evelyn J Cooke's memory.
