Williamsburg is a town in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 13,546 at the 2010 census. It was founded by English colonists in 1732 and named after Williamsburg in Scotland. The Village of Williamsburg was incorporated on December 12, 1866. It became part of Prince William County on April 14, 1907. The first post office in the town opened on December 12, 1866. The town grew rapidly due to its location near the Potomac River and its ability to ship goods and passengers across the river. By 1830, Williamsburg had a brickyard and two cotton plantations. In 1831–32, James Monroe built his home at Mifflin Place in what is now Williamsburg for himself and his family as well as their slaves who lived there until he moved them to New York City in 1800). Williamsburg's growth continued during the American Civil War because it served as a military base for General Robert E Lee and many other Confederate commanders including Jefferson Davis (a native of Charlottesville) and Stonewall Jackson (). After the war ended, many Confederate veterans returned to live here while their homes were seized by Union forces or burned down; this led to some new development around the area such as buildings that still stand today such as The Colonial Dames' Clubhouse which overlooks King's Chapel Churchyard. In 1865–1867 Councilman George Patton started an ice cream business near present-day Westover Park which soon became very successful (). In 1870 Mayor Augustus Herndon organized a group of men who built Fort Page () on Point Lookout Peninsula which they called "The Post" (). In 1872–1873 Captain John Cushing developed Lots 6 & 7 east of Market Street into what is now Historic District #2 of Williamsburg with lots 5 & 6 west of Market Street also included within it (). These developments are considered prototype neighborhoods that played an important role in shaping contemporary Williamsburg society(). In 1886 Reverend Wm Hargrave established First Presbyterian Church () on Northumberland Avenue (), one of several early Protestant denominations located near downtown (); this church would become one ofVirginia's most influential religious institutions from its beginning until 1941 when it merged with Episcopal Cathedral Parish (now known as Saint Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church). In 1899–1901 Edwin Sholes developed land between Locust Avenue and South College Road () into what is now Historic District #3ofWilliamsburg ().
