Williamsburg is a town in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 21,402 at the 2010 census. It was founded on April 14, 1774 by Captain John Smith and settlers from Jamestown. Williamsburg served as the capital of the Colony of Virginia from 1785 to 1849. In 1862, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered here to Union General Ulysses S. Grant after a three-day siege that ended with heavy losses for both sides. The Battle of Williamsburg saw one of the decisive engagements in American Civil War history and resulted in arguably the heaviest loss for Confederate troops against an invading Union army during the war. The town was largely destroyed by fire in 1865 and again by Hurricane Floyd in 1999, but it has since been rebuilt and regained its pre-war glory as a cultural center and commercial center with significant tourist attractions including two restored colonial buildings—The House at Monticello and The Gentlemen's Exchange—and several new restaurants and shops such as Mockingbird Books & Music; local businesses have also emerged to take advantage of increasing demand for housing near downtown (although development still lags behind nearby neighborhoods).

Upon General Fairfax's death in 1649, his widow Lady Jane Grey became head of government and during her tenure new roads were constructed to connect London with Petersburg and Richmond through Williamsburg and its environs. By 1730, more than 1000 houses had been erected in Williamsburgtown along with two churches and numerous public buildings including several for stores and government offices. A system of water transportation was developed through canals that connected the river system with Chesapeake Bay. During late 18th century period many British troops stationed at Fort Totten barracks (now Eastern Market) barracks used local women as kitchen helpers & laundresses because there was no proper cooking or laundry facilities available for enlisted soldiers' families within Fortress Monroe or Norfolk Siege Zone outside Hampton Roads Peninsula [today Peninsula] then Virginias major city/settlement
