Anacortes, Washington is home to the Anacortes Municipal Airport and the large United States Air Force Reserve Base. The airport has been in use since 1919 and was one of the first municipal airports in the Washington State area. The current facility was built in 1941 by the USAAF for use as a training base for pilots during World War II. It served as such until 1969, when it was transferred to the Municipality of Anacortes. In 1977, it became an Adult Day Care Center and currently serves as both an agricultural research center and general aviation terminal. The United States Air Force Reserve Base has been located here since 1951. It is home to three airfields: K-2, which is used for bomber operations; L-3/National Guard Station Joint Operations Training Area; and E-4/United States Air Forces Europe's Tactical Airlift Command Support Unit (TACSU). The latter provides aerial refueling support for coalition forces operating in Europe. Additionally, there are two main hangar areas: Hanger A on the east side of town near Lake Union Beach and Hanger B on the west side near Mount Rainier National Park. The main engine production plant at L-3 also uses this airfield as its primary location for manufacturing piston engines used by fighter aircraft and bombers alike. Since 2001, Anacortes has hosted ANAFEX - Asia Pacific Aerospace Exposition - which showcases local businesses from Asia Pacific region during weekdays starting Wednesday through Sunday inclusive with a variety of exhibits covering aerospace products & services from exhibiting companies & suppliers

The Anacortes Naval Air Station (ANAS) was founded on February 17, 1942, by the U.S. Navy as an airbase in the town of Anacortes, Washington county. The first squadron equipped with Curtiss P-40 Warhawk fighter planes arrived at ANAS on July 1, 1942. The first aircraft operated from the airfield were P-38s of Squadron Four and then B-24 Liberators of Squadron Five; both squadrons were disbanded in 1945. On October 9, 1944, the Navy activated a unit called Ninth Marine Aircraft Wing (Navy Unit No. 11) at ANAS to provide aviation support for amphibious landings operations against Japan during World War II. On December 1, 1944 Ninth Marine Aircraft Wing was redesignated Tenth Marine Aircraft Wing (Navy Unit No. 12). On January 8, 1945 Tenth Marine Aircraft Wing was redesignated First Fleet Air Arm Tactical Air Command Reserve Base Group (Air Force Unit No. 414). First Fleet Air Arm Tactical Air Command Reserve Base Group became First Naval District Hawaiian Air Depot on January 15th and continued to be known as that until its transfer to NAS Whidbey Island on May 14th AFB where it continues today as NAS Kaneohe Bay AFB Missile Range Research Branch detachment which is also responsible for providing humanitarian relief services near Kaua'i island following Hurricane Hawai'i in September 2018 After World War II the Navy mothballed all its fighter planes at ANAS and used them instead for training new pilots in non-combat roles such as Navigator/Navigator School and Carrier Landing Practice flights These practices led to eventual deployment of these fighters into combat during WWII with Fighter Groups Nos 1 through 6 based at San Diego Naval Base and then Iwo Jima before being reassigned back home late in 1943 or early 1944 when Task Force 38 became operational In early 1945 Flying Training Units began arriving from Jacksonville FL - USS Hornet CVL-1B transferred from Mariana Islands Museum - USS Enterprise CVL--4A transferred from US Naval Depot at Eniwetok Atoll - USS Langley VC-3A transferred from US Naval Aviation PlantAlaska this enabled more advanced flying techniques which eventually led to jet fighter capability
Anacortes is a city in Puget Sound, Washington, United States. The population was 993 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of King County. It was founded by Capt. George Anacortes and named after him in 1847. The first post office opened in 1851 and the first store in 1852. The city began to grow rapidly during the late 19th century with development of shipyards, an inner harbor, industrial growth, and annexation of other cities. Growth slowed during World War II as the city became a military depot for Boeing Aircraft Company facilities; however, it resumed rapid growth following the war and has since experienced significant architectural and commercial renovation and redevelopment. The nucleus of modern Anacortes originated as a group of men who organized themselves to build a wharf on Elliott Bay near what is now Pioneer Square in 1847; they were led by Captain George Anacortes (1787-1869). In 1861, they petitioned for incorporation as an independent town but were refused because King County had not yet established township formality; nevertheless, they formed the Townsite Association which met twice monthly until 1862 to discuss problems facing their new community. On February 25th 1865, when King County created its first township formality official records show that "Anacretek Township" had been organized with captain George Anacretes as its first native proprietor." Captain George Anacretes served as one of three commissioners who voted to reincorporate Elliott Bay Wharf Company into Seattle on December 12th 1871 along with James Irvine and John Halliday - becoming Seattle's second incorporated municipality after Tacoma two years earlier On November 16th 1889 City Council passed resolution annexing nearby Lynnwood into Anacortes effective January 1st 1890 On October 15th 1893 Mayor Hiram Salkin proposed enlarging Anacortes limits by incorporating unincorporated parts of Lynnwood including portions northwest of Ballard Avenue eastward to 48th Street then southwesterly along 50th Street past Snoqualmie Lake before joining Ballard Avenue) due to increasing business activity at harbor resources such as Boeing plants; this proposal was accepted by council on October 30 th In 1896 Spokane-anchored steamer USS Olympia ran aground off Point Defiance beach killing over 20 people including Captain George Anderton whose body still hangs from moorings off shore today
