Anacortes is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,332 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Anacortes were US Army officers exploring Puget Sound in 1846 when they noted an "Island" on the horizon and named it Anacortes after one of their supply ships anchored there. The first permanent settlers arrived in 1855 and built a log cabin near present day Pioneer Square. In 1865, Captain John Wesley Powell discovered and explored Lake Wanaka and named it Anacortes because the Indians called it that. In 1898, during World War I, the American naval officer Commander George Dewey charted much of Puget Sound as part of his Operation Highjump for Naval Intelligence gathering information about Japanese activities in the region. He named most of what is now King County - including Anacortes - after Admiral Dewey's ship HMS Discovery (1896). In 1954, local developer James Laughlin Jr., Sr.'s development proposal called for building a public airport on land donated by his father-in-law Rev. Amedee Jullieno to be used for religious services and other community functions only; however no vote ever took place on whether or not to build an airport due to lack of support from then Mayor Norm Stamper until 1988 when he introduced his Airport Expansion Plan which included building an airport within walking distance of downtown Anacortes with plans to develop surrounding neighborhoods into mixed use centers with commercial/residential zoning for both sets of users. The Mayor resigned effective March 1st, 1990 due to term limitsimposed by RCW 29A §205 which made him ineligible for re-election as mayor after serving two years having served two terms maximum under this law; but he remains registered as a voter in King County until death or resignation

The name Anacortes comes from an indigenous word meaning "place of saltpeter." The first Europeans to come to what is now Anacortes were fur traders and missionaries who arrived in 1807. In 1875, the first commercial watercraft reached Anacortes when it became part of Puget Sound on Lake Union. By 1899, when Puget Sound Bridge was built, Anacortes had become a well-known transportation hub for goods entering and leaving the region. The 1915 opening of Interstate 5 brought new development to town; within 15 years, more than half of all businesses in town had opened. During World War II residents helped build Shipbuilding Battalion No 4 (later USS Tacoma) at Whidbey Island Naval Shipyard; many wartime jobs were done there such as welding torpedoes onto submarines or fixing planes that got lost during combat over Japan
