Anacortes, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 7,362 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of King County. Anacortes is bordered by Seattle to the east and north, Bainbridge Island to the west and south, and Olympia to the southeast. The town was founded on February 22, 1853 by George Anacortes as a small post office called "Anacortes". The name derived from an Indian word meaning "the head of navigation." In 1875 Anacortes became an incorporated village when it accepted annexation from Seattle. The first store in Anacortes was opened in 1877 by John Hoggis. A public library was built in 1907 and dedicated May 12th by President Theodore Roosevelt. In 1951 Anacortes annexed nearby Bainbridge Island which added 2 more square miles (3 km²) to its territory; this made it one of the most populous towns within King County with over 10,000 residents by 2001. In early 2002 emergency responders were sent to help respond to Hurricane Gonzalo after concerns about power outages in other parts of Seattle led many people to leave their homes for fear that Gonzalo would Damage or Destroy them
