The first permanent European settlers in what is now Anacortes were Dutchmen who arrived around 1792. The town was platted in 1851, and named after Captain Cornelius Anacortszoon van der Hoorn, commander of an expedition against the local Native Americans in 1825. The first post office was established in 1852.
