Anacortes, Washington is a city located in King County, Washington. The population was 1,814 at the 2000 census. The city is the home of Anacortes Coffee Company and Anacortes Coffee Roasters. The first coffee beans were brought overland from India in 1825 by David Starr Jordan. He and his partners traded goods with the Yakima Nation and bought up all of the coffee beans they could find. In 1852, Anacortes became one of the first cities to adopt a municipal water system. Coffee was well known in America before it was exported to other countries such as Brazil or Africa. One account says that John Newmark tasted a cup of coffee from Brazil while visiting Spain in 1772 and decided that he would like to start his own business importing coffee into America. In 1882, two brothers named Harry Blackledge opened what has been called "the first gourmet store" in Seattle proper when they combined their interests in cigars and coffee products under one roof on First Avenue North near Union Station. This store became an early center for roasting and tasting different types of coffees from around the world before moving down First Avenue to its current location across from Safeway on State Street in 1984. Barton's Coffee House continued to serve delicious cups of café con leche until 1938 when it moved out of its original space due to fire damage caused by vandals who had broken into it during the night hours! In 1951, an annex was added to Barton's building which housed their grocery store until 1978 when it also burned down! The old grocery building still stands today (re- built as part of Safeway) and can be seen through its window overlooking State Street! In 1970, Starbucks opened its doors within walking distance of downtown Anacortes! Today Starbucks is considered one of America’s classic cafes – having been open since 1971! It has become so popular that multiple locations have been built throughout King County including downtownSeattle (opened 1997), Bellevue (opened 2003), Kirkland (opened 2009), Redmond (opened 2010) and Lynnwood (opened 2011).

Anacortes, Washington is a town located in Kitsap County, Washington. The population was 5,801 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. The first European to sight and explore the Puget Sound region was Juan de Fuca on July 9, 1492 while sailing his vessel " Nuestra Señora" from Spain. He named these islands "Islas Anacortes" after the Portuguese Anacleto da Silveira who had explored this area in 1501. In 1851, American Colonist William Clark surveyed and mapped Puget Sound; he named what are now Anacortes and Bainbridge Islands for General John C. Fremont because of their similarity in shape to an olive branch (the shape of Fremont's alma mater). The first store in Anacortes opened in 1904. On February 2nd 1909, voters approved a resolution to become a town and incorporated as such on November 6th that year by virtue of passage of a Town Charter ratified on December 3rd by the Board of Supervisors. The name 'Anacortes' comes from Spanish explorer Juan de Fuca who named these islands 'Islas Anacortes' after Portuguese Anacleto da Silveira who explored this area in 1501 In 1941 during World War II when Japanese forces invaded America there were many skirmishes along the Pacific coast between American forces and Japan's Imperial Navy over control of strategic points including Oak Harbor Naval Station - now Everett - near Tacoma Anacorte was one small community within Japan's military occupation zone which lasted until late 1945 when it finally fell to Allied Forces following Operation Crossroads which destroyed all Japanese naval bases throughoutNorthwest America including Puget Sound On October 1st 1942 United States Coast Guard cutter MV Northwest Passage delivered supplies from Eniwetok Atoll to Kodiak Island off Alaska's northwest coast when Lt COL Homer Kohnen commanding USCP Anchorage District 7 radioed headquarters ashore with news that Japanese ships were en route to supply submarines operating off Urikushima Atoll where they were believed To be building new aircraft carriers HMS Repulse and Halsey . A force consisting of 11 USCGCs USS Eldridge (CG-4), USS Holland ( CG-5), USS Valley Forge ( CG-6) USS Powhatan (AGS-2) USS Shiloh (AO-1) ,USS GrifFINer(CVE-68)and LCDR James Mclntyre commandeered MV Northwest Passage while anchored offshore Kodiak Island rendezvoused with escorting destroyers HMAS Perthshire (DG Pounder), HMAS Melbourne(CVA Hindmarsh), HMAS Ridgeback(CVA Ting Hooker), HMAS Sydney Beaufort(CVA Newcastle )and Portland(CTP Torres Strait Islanders ). After dark on October 2nd 1942 US Coast Guard Cutter MV Northwest Passage arrived at Kodiak Island providing vital assistance during World War II as Japan's navy attempted unsuccessfully to build an aircraft carrier using Urikushima Atoll . This event helped solidify American control over Alaska waters following World War II .
