The first store in town was built by George Hinkle and his son-in-law Jacob Hallock on Pacific Avenue in 1853. Hinkle's store became one of the most successful businesses in town. A post office was established at Anacortes on November 1, 1853, and served until it was discontinued on December 15, 1893. In 1854, John McNaught donated land to make way for an Agricultural College which would become University of Washington (now Seattle). The college opened its doors on September 17, 1861 with thirty students; however enrollment quickly grew to over 500 students before finally closing in 1865 due to financial difficulties. The school reopened under new management with an increased number of classrooms and buildings before moving again to its present location overlooking Elliott Bay in 1890 when University Park began to be developed nearby. In 1916–1917, ANACORTES was designated as part of the National Defense Reserve District; this gave rise to rumors that the city might be moved from King County if war came across the ocean unnecessarily or if Japan attacked American territory along the Pacific Northwest coast without warning(). However no such plans ever materialized and ANACORTES continued unchanged as both its civic center and original university campus remains today one of King County's most popular tourist destinations despite occasional appearances by military personnel stationed there (e.g., Joint Base Lewis-McChord). This growth potential can be briefly summarized as follows: 1) There are plans for more housing developments within blocks of downtownAnacortes which could eventually result in an increase in job opportunities for locals; 2) There has been an increasing trend towards restaurants/cafés opening up within walking distanceof each other which could lead to more people coming out onto streets evenings & weekends instead of staying inside all day like they have done historically; 3) Over time some retail stores may move out into newer areas nearer Interstate 5 while others may stay put primarily because they offer good deals on inventory relative to similar stores located miles away
