Anacortes, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 12,898 at the 2010 census. It is the largest incorporated community in King County and home to two universities: Mount St. Helens University and Western Washington University. Coffee has been an important part of the local economy for centuries and Anacortes is known for its quality coffee beans. The first coffee crop was grown in Anacortes in 1876. The area that today makes up Anacortes was inhabited by Native American tribes for many years before European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1700s. In 1792, Captain James Cook discovered what would become Seattle while exploring northwest Russia; this led to Spanish missionaries coming to Alaska and establishing missions near present-day Puget Sound. By 1851, over 120 people lived in what would later be called Anacortes when it became part of King County; most were farmers or fishermen who grew tobacco and wheat on their properties. In 1876, a group of Swedish entrepreneurs founded Pacific Northwestern Coffee Company with help from Dutchman Hendrik Stevens (the founder of Dutchnaamco). The company began shipping coffee from Ystad, Sweden across Lake Superior to North America via steamship; it wasn’t until 1915 that Pacific Northwest Coffee Company moved its headquarters from Ystad to Seattle so that it could better compete with Nestle AG’s Swiss Swift line which had begun shipping coffee directly between Europe and North America starting around 1909. After World War II started, demand for coffee plummeted as war production diverted resources away from agriculture; however, growth resumed following the end of World War II thanks to increased consumer spending on automobiles and other appliances made with synthetic materials such as nylon plastic (see “Coffee Without Borders: From Swatch To Cup”). Today's Anacortes includes a mix of old brick warehouses dating back to 1886 used by lumber companies now housing apartments as well as new development built since 2000 including Mount St Helens University which occupies one former agricultural warehouse – once used by Boeing Aircraft Co.; Western Washington University which occupies another former lumber mill building now home to student housing; and an amusement park located east of town along Interstate 5 where passengers can enjoy rides like roller coasters and water parks (see "Anacortes Revisited" photo gallery below).

In 1930 it was renamed Anacortes after Rear Admiral John A. Anacorte who commanded American forces during World War I. The first permanent settlers in what would become Anacortes were farmers from Northern Ireland who arrived by boat in 1854. By 1870, there were 300 people living in an area that now includes most of downtown Anacortes and much of Southeast Tacoma. The railroad arrived in1892, bringing new workers and businesses to town including landfills, breweries, lumberyards and shipyards. During World War I (1914-18), Rear Admiral John A. Anacorte led American forces against British troops stationed along Puget Sound shores; his nameakeship remains one of the few Allied warships still afloat in Seattle Harbor today (though its location has since been updated). After America's entry into World War II, Naval District Headquarters moved from Olympia to Tacoma due to construction projects needed for war efforts; this left little opportunity for local businesses to prosper so growth slowed during the early postwar years until a dramatic increase in population following World War II caused housing prices to skyrocket which again stimulated economic activity In recent years there has been an increase in crime rates with robberies accounting for 60% or more of total crimes reported annually However community activists are working hard to address problems such as poverty & lack Of education while also developing plans for future growth

The Arabs brought coffee to Baghdad in the 6th century AD and began developing their own variants of the drink. In 1755, an Egyptian trader, Ali ibn Fadl al-Khatib, discovered a new source of coffee beans in Peru and brought them back to Cairo. He named his discovery "Coffee."
Anacortes, Washington is a small town in King County, Washington. The population was 9,031 at the 2010 census. It lies on Puget Sound and is bordered by the cities of Seattle to the east and Tacoma to the west. The Anacortes Naval Air Station ( NAS) is located in the town. The first Europeans to visit what is now Anacortes were shipwrecked on Orcas Island in 1792. They named it Iskconaquidh (Island of Weeds). In 1851, when gold was discovered near Olympia, people from Anacortes began prospecting for gold and silver in what is now Pierce County. By 1855, there were over 100 miners in Anacortes. The first store opened in 1857 and a post office was established in 1861. In 1865, the Navy awarded an land grant to John Denny for his settlement on Kitsap Peninsula which became known as Dennytown after him. Dennyville grew up around this post office until its closure in 1907 when it merged with Anacorte into one village under new government regulations that banned consolidated villages with more than 50 residents without special permission from their respective governments. In 1909-10, an important development took place when both water supply and electric power services were brought to the community through a private company called Northern Electric Company Ltd., thanks to Congressman George Norris's efforts during World War I based on his bill "A Bill To ProvideElectric Power For All American Citizens." At that time much of King County was still agricultural country with several large farms supplying power generation capacity for local loads while farmers used horses or mules drawn chariots to bring produce back home from markets across Puget Sound; these horsedrawn carts are still visible along Aurora Avenue today! A public works project built two miles north of town included installation of two miles of water main so that homes could be connected directlyto municipal water systems! This marked a turning point for Anacorte as it became an integral part of King County's ever growing urban fabric! The importance placed on electricity didn't stop there however; examples include: 1) construction of Oneida Dam & Reservoir upstream from town (1926), 2) electrification of most schools & businesses within downtown area by 1954 (!), 3) establishment & operation/maintenance/operationof three regional airport facilities-Edmonds Field Airport (1928), West Seattle Municipal Airport (#1 1932), & Sea-Tac International Airport (#2 1937)--all within just five years!--an incredible accomplishment given that air travel then consisted mainly of Boeing 707s taking passengers all over Asia! 4) massive renovation program undertaken at NAS grounds starting circa 1974--still ongoing as Ofcom Fisheries Inspection Facility--one OF THE LARGEST RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTERS IN AMERICA FOR FISHERIES ONLY!!! 5) continued growth witnessed through numerous housing developments having started before 2000 such as Orchard View Estates (1976), Bristow Place(1982), Northpointe Village(1991)), Harbor Heights(1999)) etc...thus marking yet another major milestone for this rapidly evolving community! NAVY AIR STATION WAS OPENED JULY 11th 1942 BY CAPTAIN JOHN CAMPBELL USNR.. A MILITARY BASE THAT WAS USED TO PROVIDE AIRCRAFT SUPPORT TO THE NAVY.. IT WAS CLOSED DOWN IN OCTOBER 1945 AFTER THE WAR..
