The town was named for Captain Anacortes, a captain in the U.S. Navy who led a expedition to explore and map the Puget Sound region in 1841-1842. The first post office was established in Anacortes on December 12, 1857. In 1890, a hotel and store were built on what is now First Street near Railroad Avenue. Anacortes became an incorporated municipality on October 1, 1907. On November 6, 1984, it was renamed King City after then-Governor Cecil W. King Jr..

The first Europeans to visit what is now Anacortes were missionaries from China who set up a mission there in 1853. In 1861, Anacortes was named for Captain John Anacorta, captain of HMS " Hero". The name may have been derived from an observation made by Lieutenant George Vancouver while exploring Puget Sound: "The heights around us are very high enough to be called mountains", but they are not mentioned specifically in his explorations. In 1872, Captain Edwin Cushing of USS Monitor built a wharf on present-day Whidbey Island to supply his ship with potable water from nearby Lake Washington and store foodstuffs brought ashore by sailors on her voyage across Puget Sound. He named the wharf Harbor Point because it lay at the mouth of Harbin Road (present-day Tacoma) then being built as an important corridor connecting Tacoma with Olympia and areas north and east of Seattle. Captain Cushing's wharf became an important post office and trading center for many years before becoming a small town when word spread about Tacoma's growing industry and commerce during World War I when local farmers began producing arms for America's war effort. After America entered World War II, Harbor Point continued to serve as a port until its closure in 1987 due to lack of boat traffic or competition from larger ports along Snohomish Bay south of Everett.

Anacortes is a small town in Washington County, Oregon, United States. The population was 993 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro, OR-WA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Anacortes were the estimated 350 or so Pomo Indians who lived in and around present day Anacortes on the west side of Hood Canal. In 1855, patent No. 7,724 was issued to George Fenton for an area now including Anacortes and most of what is now Clallam County. This grant included land that later became part of Hood Canal National Wildlife Refuge. In 1853, Nicholas Atwood established a sawmill on the east side of Hood Canal near present day Middle River Road and Canoe Creek which would become one of the largest mills in Oregon until it closed its doors in 1907. In 1865, Edwin Troup built a gristmill on Canoe Creek which served as both local source for flour and also exported flour from nearby ports such as Salem and Newcastle for shipment to eastern markets. In 1870, Aube Dyer established a bakery on Main Street which became one of the largest baking businesses in Oregon until it closed its doors in 1951. It wasn’t until 1915 when Charles Halsey founded his grocery store on First Avenue which would become one of biggest grocery stores ever established outside of metropolitanPortland or Seattle; Halsey’s across from Pioneer Courthouse Square remains one of Portland’s most iconic buildings today! It wasn't until 1958 when Vernon Alder opened his farm equipment dealership at 5405 NE Sandy Boulevard (now SE Hawthorne Boulevard) that Anacortes started seeing some growth with new residents moving into town during this time period looking for farmland and access to good schools/movies/restaurants etc...Alder passed away in 1961 but his widow continued operations until her death in 1984 helping create what still counts as Anacortes's main commercial artery today - Sandy Boulevard!
