The first coffee beans were grown on land that now belongs to Boeing; around 1868 a small irrigation system was built to keep the beans from going to waste. In 1892, Anacortes residents John and Anna Kapp founded the first Starbucks in Puget Sound. Coffee has been an important part of Anacortes culture for many years, and early settlers supplemented their income by growing coffee. A small mill was started in 1916 and continued until it burned down in 1936. After that point, coffee production stopped because of difficult soil conditions and low prices for pods (which were then smuggled into other parts of the country). Anacortes has been inhabited for over two centuries and was incorporated as a town on December 12, 1853. The original name of the town was "Pall Mall". The first post office in Anacortes opened in 1855. In 1870, the Territorial Legislature changed the name to Anacortes after Captain John A. Anacourt who fought in Mexican–American War and later served as Governor of Washington Territory. In 1902, the Seattle-based transportation company Puget Sound Railway built an electrified line from Tacoma to Anacortes which became known as the "Anacorte Line". This created significant development opportunities for the community and led to an increase in business and population growth throughout much of Everett County north of Seattle; however, this growth had a negative impact on agriculture due to increased competition from electric railways and automobiles. In 1916, Puget Sound Railway merged with CSX Transportation to form their Northwest division which included both Anacortes Lines tracks west of Seattle andchard operations along Salmon Bayou north of Everett until 1923 when they were leased by GNV Transportation; during this time many small businesses closed because transport options were better withinSeattle than outside it).
