The United StatesArmy has deployed in support of numerous conflicts throughout the course of its history. Some of these deployments have been gruelling and hazardous, while others have been more successful and demoralising. The Battle Ground Infantry Battalion (BGIB) is one such unit that has seen action in various wars across the continent. The BGIB was first constituted on 1 January 1861 as part of the Washington State Militia. On 17 July 1863, BGIB was ordered to march against a combined force under General Ulysses S. Grant at Bull Run Bridge. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the BGIB succeeded in forcing Grant’s army to retreat. In 1865, BGIB fought at Gettysburg where they were finally successful in destroying a large Confederate force. In 1871, they served during the Mexican-American War when they fought at Palo Alto and Churubusco. They also participated in the American Civil War where they were disbanded on 15 September 1865 after being called up for two years service without any combat experience. After disbanding, BGIB reformed on 24 December 1875 and served as an infantry battalion until November 1886 when it amalgamated with neighbouring battalion “Washington Regiment” to form what is now known as the Battle Ground Infantry Battalion (BGIB). This battallion has seen action throughout many wars including World War I where it was sent to Europe to fight against Austria-Hungary; World War II where it fought on both sides ofthe conflict; and most recently Afghanistan where it played a major role in Operation Neptune’s Spear which ended with NATO victory over Taliban forces

Battle Ground has been home to American soldiers since 1775 when British forces burned down Fort Necessity on present day Yakima River Bridge Road near Battle Ground Creek Dam. For more than 200 years, Native Americans have lived hereabouts, sometimes hunting white cattle while others gathered firewood or collected animal pelts for clothing and warmth during harsh winter weather. One Struggle After Another: The Indians vs Whites The first European settlers arrived in what is nowWashington County in 1792 through trader George Vancouver’s ship Discovery. He sighted a huge body of water calledthe Columbia River which he thought might be a shortcut to Asia through Siberia but instead discovery new land rich with timber resources including much-needed lumber for building homes, churches and warships during America’s fur-trade expansion into Asia at that time known as “Mountain Men” phase which spanned from Alaska all the way down to California . Fearing that these valuable resources would fall into Chinese hands if they were not exploiting them quickly enough, Captain James Cook sailed his Endeavor overland from Tahiti on November 26th 1793 seeking an entry point into China through what is now Russia but foundered off Sentinel Island after becoming lost in thick foggy waters with no signof civilization or possible landfall until February 7th AST when native men wearing modern clothes discovered him stranded on shore about 12 miles southeastofpresentdayYakima River Bridge Road
