Battle Ground is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The town was founded by George Vancouver in 1847 as Battle Ground Lake, after the battle ground near where it now stands in what is now Snohomish County. The name came from an Indian word meaning "place of severe fighting." In 1892, Battle Ground became part of Seattle and remained so until 1959 when it became an independent municipality within King County. At its peak in 1920, Battle Ground had a population of 3,500 people. However, by 1990 the population had decreased to 1,821 due to various reasons including suburbanization and loss of employment in the local paper industry. In 2003-2004, a $10 million project called "BATTLEGROUND: A Turning Point" was begun to revive downtown BattleGround and create new businesses and housing opportunities for residents; however this effort failed to reverse the trend towards decline seen during previous decades.
