Battle Ground is a census-designated place in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,393 at the 2010 census. The area around Battle Ground has been inhabited by Native Americans for over three thousand years and was known as "the land of the Puyallup." The first European to visit the area was Captain George Vancouver on December 7, 1792. He named the site Puget Sound after Mount Rainier in what is now Seattle. After the Treaty of 1818 ceded most of present-day King County to Washington, Battle Ground became part of Boundary Inlet Township in Tantalus Park District. On November 3, 1907, it was made a city and incorporated as such under its current name. In 1861 Union General Ulysses S. Grant set up his headquarters at Fort Snelling near Battle Ground while he conducted his ill-fated Offensive against Confederate General Robert E. Lee in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. There are several rare eyewitness accounts from that day which have come down to us since then about General Grant's military operations that day: one account says that he rode through town "in search of some enemy who had managed to escape," while another reports him stopping at an opera house where he heard that General Pope had been defeated and captured by Confederate troops nearby; when asked about this news by local residents who followed him inside (of which there were many), Grant replied simply with a smile and ordered them not to speak any further about it because he would know more than they could possibly know himself. A few decades later historian Bruce Catton would write favorably about this particular episode when writing about Grant's life during the American Civil War: "He passed through Battle Ground on November 3rd [1861], just days before Genl Ulysses S. Grant’s disastrous offensive against Robert E Lee in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley... A number of soldiers recall seeing Ulysses S.--known then as ‘Generalissimo’--passing through town on horseback... One writer observed how handsome he looked riding through town “in search of some enemy who had managed to escape...No one knows exactly why or how Clinton discovered Popely being held prisoner but Ulysses S.'s presence in town indicates that something important was happening.'" This incident is significant because it provides evidence that althoughGrant may have been successful militarily against Lee, his efforts Ended up resulting in considerable civilian casualties due to their skirmishes along the way - something which would become increasingly common throughout much of the American Civil War itself (even leading directly into large battles like Gettysburg).
