Bellevue is the most populous city in King County and the second-most populous city in Seattle after Seattle. Bellevue has been an agricultural community since before it was a town. The first post office opened in 1885. The name of Bellevue comes from two British prisoners who were captured during the Oregon Wars and held at Fort Snelling for three years before being released on parole in 1879. They took up land north of present day Bellevue to create what would become Bellevue Township. In 1907, a group of businessmen pooled their money and bought 1,000 acres (400 ha) of land east of what is now downtown Bellevu
Bellevue is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 26,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bellevue-Everett-Renton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Bellevue were two fur traders, Capt. George Vancouver and Capt. David Thompson, on their way from Russian Russia to trade with the Northwest Coast in 1807. They landed at Whidbey Island on May 17th and started up the beach for days before finally finding an anchorage about a mile wide and three miles long suitable for ships of all sizes on July 1st off the coast of Puget Sound. On July 5th they anchored near where today's Renton Center stands and began to build a crude palisade fortification which would become known as Fort Victoria (later renamed FortGeorge). The first European settler in Bellevue was Elias Biddle who arrived in 1824 from Holland via Seattle and then walked upriver to take possession of land he had purchased along approach road leading from Everson to present day Bellevue. He named his farmstead "Oregon Hill" after Oregon Treaty boundary between Great Britain and America that ended the Canada–American War of 1812. Biddle also built several other small houses around this time including one near Everett Park today's Everett Square Shopping Center which still stands as a memorial to him as well as others early pioneers in Bellevue who made important contributions to its growth over the years including Jens Jensen (1860-1940), Harry Smith (1868-1925) and Julius Rosenwald (1865-1937). In 1881, real estate mogul James Wickersham bought much of what is now Bellevue from Biddle family for $2 million dollars making it one of Seattle's most expensive neighborhoods at that time. Wickersham subdivided what became Bellevue into several blocks with large homes being developed such as 2700 2nd Avenue SW which still stands today; 3000 3rd Avenue South; 6000 Gustave Way NE; 7000 Union Street NW; 8000 State Street SE; 9000 Tacoma Place NW; 10000 12th Ave SW He also completed many important civic improvements such as building street lights etc., creating an alley system connecting different blocks within BellevUEs boundaries which remains intact today called "Wickersham Way", opening up much of downtown Redmond for business development etcetera helpingto create one of Seattles most vibrant communities during its early years Bellevue quickly grew into one of King County's most vibrant cities with major businesses like Sears Roebuck & Co., Boeingaircraft Corporation, Microsoft Corporation among others locating there beginning in earnest during World War I when production shifted from Seattle to BellevUE because there was no other place available close by where workers could be housed securely while they awaited orders During Prohibition era many local businesses went out of business but overall BellevUE bounced back very quickly becoming an even more thriving community post prohibition thanks largely to its large number of young families who continued moving into town during high school/early adulthood boom period
