The history of the Bellevue Coast Guard Station began in 1903 when a group of men from nearby Seattle organized to create a Coast Guard station at the mouth of the Fremont River. The first station was built onshore on an island in the river and served as a base for patrols and protecting shipping. Over time, the need for more personnel led to the construction of additional stations along the coast. The Bellevue Coast Guard Station was one of these stations and opened its doors in 1953. It has been through many changes over its years, but it has always been committed to providing quality service to its residents and visitors. Today, Bellevue Coast Guard Station is home to both a Search and Rescue team as well as multiple law enforcement agencies including detectives, sheriff’s deputies, state troopers and US Customs & Border Protection officers. In addition to its responsibilities within local community, Bellevue Coast Guard Station also plays an important role in support of operations across Washington State by participating in joint operations with other Federal Agencies such as Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) and National Park Service (NPS). Bellevue Coast Guard Station is proud to have played an essential role in keeping our community safe during times of emergencies such as floods, hurricanes or earthquakes. The city was founded on December 12, 1883 by John Denny and other pioneers from Tacoma, Washington as a small village named Bellevue Springs. It grew rapidly due to its location near Puget Sound and its access to railroad transportation. In 1905 Bellevue became an incorporated town with a population of 30,000. On April 6, 1909 Bellevue became the first city in Washington State to have electric streetlights. The growth of Bellevue continued into the 20th century as it became an important commercial center for farmers and businessmen in the agricultural region around Puget Sound. The early 21st century saw significant redevelopment of Bellevue as it experienced rapid growth in technology companies such as Microsoft and Amazon Web Services along with new immigrants from Asia and Latin America who brought their own cultures and economies to the area. However, recent years have seen some decline in activity related to these industries while median household income has stagnated or declined slightly since 2007.
