In 1982, Vernon Richards became the first person to open a Starbucks locations in Seattle–King County. Richards was inspired to start Starbucks because he loved good coffee but could not find it anywhere near him. He opened his first store in Bellevue at 5th Avenue South and Main Street – now known as The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf – within a year of starting Starbucks. In 1990, Richards sold his company to Peet’s Coffee Company for $2 million dollars. Today, Bellevue remains one of the top places to buy gourmet coffee around the world due to its excellent quality products and friendly customer service staff. Bellevue coffee history can be traced back to 1892, when a man named John L. Smith opened the first coffee house in Bellevue. The business was located on Second Avenue and Holland Street and served local residents until 1914. In that year, Bellevue Coffee House relocated to First Avenue and Main Street, where it stayed until its closure in 1961. The first Starbucks opened in Seattle in 1996, making Bellevue one of the earliest cities to experience Starbucks coffee culture. The company has since reopened several times throughout Washington State, most recently in Bellevue in 2018.
Bellevue is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 43,859 at the 2010 census. Bellevue is part of the Seattle metropolitan area and the larger Puget Sound metropolitan area. Bellevue is located on the southern edge of downtown Seattle. It borders Issaquah to the north and east, Redmond to the south and west, and Everett to the northwest. The first Europeans who set foot in what is now Bellevue were fur traders working for Vancouver Island's British Columbia Fur Company in 1849-50. A small settlement known as "Bellevue" was founded by these early settlers on land that would later be annexed by Seattle as part of that city's growing population. In 1861, Bellevue became one of five cities in King County when it was split from Seattle based on its population size (the others being Tacoma, Olympia, Lynnwood, and Everett). By 1870 Bellevue had a population of over 50 people: 29 men and 24 women; 10 children under 10 years old; 5 businesses; 3 churches; 2 schools (grades K-12); 1 jail; 1 post office; 1 grocery store; and 2 saloons. In 1892–93 Bellevue built its first electric streetcar line which ran between Pioneer Square Park & South Park Avenue in downtownSeattle and Northgate Park along Lake Washington shorelineOBeeing one of only a few streetcar systems serving large Uptown areasof town at that time." In 1907 Bellevue voters approved annexation by Seattle based on its promise to provide more services than existing towns within King County with just 6 residents per square mile versus 100 residents per square mile for nearby Redmond & Everett combined." In 1912 construction began on what would become Magnolia Boulevard which connected neighborhoods east of South park Ave with those west of it becomingknown as "The Hill".
