The first military gift ever given to Bellevue was a musket from Captain George Vancouver during his 1821 campaign against the Comanche Indians. Other early gifts include cannons and swords from General John C. Fremont and Major-General Alexander McClellan. The city of Bellevue grew rapidly in the late 1800s and early 1900s as it became an important center for defense and trade along the Oregon Trail. In 1915, Bellevue was named one of twelve villages in Washington state designated as " Military Village." Bellevue is a city in the U.S. state of Washington, located on the Puget Sound region of the north-central coast of the Pacific Ocean. The population was 26,865 at the 2010 census, making Bellevue the second largest city in King County after Seattle. Bellevue is part ofSeattle–Tacoma metropolitan area and it is also included in its larger Puget Sound region. The first permanent European settlement in what would become Bellevue was made by Captain George Vancouver on December 17, 1805 when he and his men landed at nearby Husky Bay to establish a trading post with local natives. The first Europeans to live permanently in what would become Bellevue were Captains John McLoughlin and James Cook who explored Puget Sound in 1792-93 and 1801 respectively; both men found land hereabouts but no permanent habitation was established until after Captain Vancouver's arrival. The origins of modern Bellevue go back even further than this - one early settler, Mrs. Anna Lewis, arrived with her husband David Lewis inMarch 1788 fromwhat is now Hartfordshire, England on board HMS Discovery during her maiden voyage across North America as part of an attempt to open trade between British Columbia and Spanish California (the "Alaska" campaign). David Lewis had been brought over as a passenger on HMS Discovery by his friend Major James Douglas – one of two ships despatched under then Commodore Alexander MacKenzie from Scotland to explore northwest North America including Alaska before setting sail for Spain with supplies bound for Russian Siberia via Manila Bay on July 1st, 1789 . As such it can be claimed that early Bellevue was founded by more than one person! In 1851 Barclay & Company became first White Citizens Ferry Company operating services between Seattle/Bellevue and Olympia/Everett through ferryboats moored along Lake Union Boulevard downtown which continued until 1965 when service ended due to increased traffic caused by Interstate 5 construction connecting Everett directly with Tacoma via SeaTac Airport! King County began annexation proceedings for all or portions of what are now Bellevue, Tacoma and Moses Lake Counties into their new county on November 3rd 1889 following passage of legislation establishing King County that same day; this allowed for expanded jurisdiction over these areas resulting in today's borders! In 1902 City Council adopted a resolution recognizing King County’s intention to annex all or parts of Bellevue into their new county – an event that has been annually celebrated as “Annexation Day” ever since! Over time many other communities have joined forces with BellevUE developing into today’s vibrant community encompassing some 111 properties situated within boundaries defined by water Arena Boulevard southward (including parts of neighboring Shoreline), Lakeside Avenue eastward (including much later developed Queen Anne Park), Bothell Way northward extending southeast past Yesler Heights northeast reaching Snohomish River just beyond current day Redmond before ending at Moses Lake! In addition streets running through our community have been named after notable people or places like Alki Beach Drive (named for author Jules Verne), Ballard Road (named for banker Angus Ballard), Stevens Point Boulevard (named for General George Armstrong Custer) etcetera!!! Finally we should not forget about our rich history which includes events such as World War II veterans march down Harbor Street commemorating those who gave their lives fighting against fascism throughout most Europe while featuring music nightly from local bands playing right up until dawn at Plaza Live Music Hall complete with celebrity appearances each Wednesday night!! So much has changed here since then it’s hard to keep up…..especially when you consider that only 50 years ago life expectancy outside the urban core was just 42 years!!!
