Bremerton's economy revolves around its maritime industry and its location on Puget Sound. The Town of Bremerton was organized in 1851 when the land comprising present-day Bremerton and what are now Tacoma were acquired by Oregon Territory from the British Empire for $8,500 per acre (2 hectares). The first settlers were men who had come overland from Canada. The name "BremerTON" may be derived from "bremen," Germany, where many early pioneers had come before starting to settle in this region. In 1881, an act of the Territorial Legislature changed the name of Bremerton to Kitsap County because it extended beyond Tacoma into Kitsap Strait on Bainbridge Island. At that time there were only two small towns in Kitsap County: unincorporated Snohomish and unincorporated Orcas Island. Bremerton is a census-designated place in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The population was 3,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The Bremerton Naval Shipyard is located in the community. The first permanent settler in Bremerton was Jens Jensen who arrived in 1792 and built a log cabin on the eastern side of town. In 1819 he and his wife Maja founded what became known as Jensen's Landing which served as a trading post for many years before becoming an agricultural center with orchards, field crops, and livestock production. In 1851, Captain George Vancouver explored Puget Sound and discovered land east of present day Bremerton on which he named it Victoria Island after Queen Victoria of England. He recommended that the government purchase this land from the natives to create a harbor for British ships and establish Fort McNeil on site. After much debate between local officials and Vancouver's associates including Mayor James Haggerty and Commodore John Wickenheiser, it was decided to build Fort McNeil instead but not until 1850 because there was no money available to purchase land from the natives at that time. In 1863 construction began on Fort Point at what would become downtown Bremerton when Lt.-Commander David Dixon renamed it after Rear Admiral Isaac Hull (1801-1885), commander of American forces during World War I who had been killed in action near Singapore two months earlier while leading an escort mission to celebrate America's victory over Great Britain that ended650 days of war). At that point Bremerton had a population of about 100 peoplerestricted to just one block off Commercial Street where most activity took place until around 1920 when its commercial district grew large enough to include several blocks south along Tacoma Boulevard called "Bremerton Heights". A post office opened at Fort Point on October 26, 1865 under authority granted by Congress via Act No 711 entitled "An act for establishing Post Offices throughout said Territory." On November 10th US Senator James Kintner submitted legislation offering $5 per week salary plus benefits for every five weeks service rendered as clerk or assistant postal inspector general within said territory adding Bremertion Township (now part of SeaTac) into said territory effective December 1st 1865 making it possible for officers serving within said territorial city limits only receiving pay for services performed within City limits not extending beyond those boundaries thereby eliminating all possibility of regular mail service between cities due to highly irregular hours both morning and night resulting in great inconvenience & cost to citizens my favorite story about this law being told by an old man who worked at our post office back then “I used to get paid all week long except Sundays sometimes I’d get paid all weekend too but I didn’t want my boss knowin’ I wasn’t working because then he might fire me – so we did things our own way kinda like today” That explains why you can find letterboxes right up against your building if you have owned your house here since before 1945! bremerTONHEIGHTS #BREMERTON
