The Bremerton Army National Guard was activated on November 15, 1916 and served in World War I. The unit was disbanded in 1919. On July 1, 1951, the Bremerton Army National Guard became the Washington ANG. The Washington ANG was activated on September 17, 1951 and served in the Vietnam War. The ANG was disbanded on January 2, 1973. On December 12, 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt authorized the purchase of 240 cannons from France for $2 million dollars. These cannons were to be used by both the United States Coast Guard and the U.SArmy as part of a new artillery program known as peacetime armament production (PAP). This program would eventually become known as Project Mockingbird and continue until 1976 when it was cancelled due to budget cuts within the Department of Defense (DOD). In 1945, Bremerton became home to Naval Ordnance Command’s Pacific Missile Range Facility which housed two Nike Ajax missiles launchers capable of launch at any time from Launch Complex 37B/38A at Seawolf Point Naval Air Base outside Tacoma. However this site had been abandoned by 1946 because it lacked an airfield infrastructure adequate for launching ICBM's. In 1958-1959 NAS Whidbey Island hosted a Nike missile range test exercise called "First Shot" with 3 YF-1Fs from Vandenberg AFB California piloted by Lt Col Johnnie Ingram flying over Mt Baker area then released back into atmosphere over Puget Sound area before landing at NAS Kitsap Peninsula .

It is home to the Kitsap Maritime Museum and the Bremerton-Hoquiam Ferry Terminal. The first permanent settler in what would become Bremerton was Capt. John Eager who arrived on July 15, 1836. He named his new town after his brother George Bremer who had recently arrived from England with his family and business interests there. The first post office was established in 1838 and remained open until 1865 when it became part of Tacoma. In 1907, the town had a population of 2,500 people and annexed adjacent communities of Hoquiam and Port Orchard which formed the current city limits today. The name "Bremerton" originated from Captain John Eager's idea for a port town on Puget Sound where goods could be unloaded and shipped out to ports around the world without having to go through Seattle or Tacoma. Today's downtown area is filled with historical buildings dating back to pioneer days such as the old brementh ferry terminal which opened in 1907, First National Bank (now Wells Fargo) which dates back to 1862, Pacific Telephone Company Building (now known as Tower Quarters), The Wiggle Bar & Grill (formerly known as Joe's Pizza), Bremerton High School (now Everett Community College), Maritas Fisheries Processories Inc., Home Depot across Northwest Highway from Interstate 5/Umatilla Road Bridge were among many businesses that have been located here over time including Starbucks Coffee & Donuts on University Avenue - now occupied by Rite Aid - local carpenters shops like Jiffy Lube & Eddy's Emporium; various restaurants like Ruby Tuesday & Carl's Jr.; multiple movie theaters including KFC & Regal Cinemas; numerous retail stores such as Sears Hardware Store; etc.. Today there are few if any factories left standing in Bremerton aside from OneSteel manufactures used steel products near I-5/Umatilla Road bridge just east of downtownBreMERTON MARITUS FISHERIES INC., BREMERTON HIGH SCHOOL
