The first store in Bremerton was built on Commercial Street in 1855 by Denny and his partners. The town grew rapidly with many businesses opening up throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s including a brewery, post office, grocery store, lumberyard, hotel/motel and several churches. By 1907 there were over fifty businesses in Bremerton with a population of over one thousand people! The post-World War II boom period began to slow down during the 1950s as jobs disappeared due to automation and other technological advances. However, Bremerton kept growing through the 1990s until 2000 when it reached its current size of 5,022 residents. During this time many new projects were begun such as becoming an international trade center for the region with support from Boeing; developing an expanded port; creating more housing opportunities; and expanding educational opportunities across all levels from high school to college level courses! In recent years many small businesses have closed or seen modest growth while larger companies have taken hold within the community making it one of the most competitive areas in Kitsap County!
