The Marine Corps Deployment Gift History program began in Bremerton, Washington in 1961. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. The first European to visit Bremerton was Juan de Fuca in 1792 when he explored Puget Sound and its tributaries. He named it "Frca" after his ship, the "Ferdinand". In 1851, a group of Norwegian immigrants founded what became known as the Bremerton Settlement near present-day downtown Bremerton. The settlement grew rapidly due to lumbering and land speculation by early settlers; it became an independent town in 1887. It remained an agricultural center until the late 19th century when heavy industry arrived and development transformed Bremerton into one of Washington's most important port cities. During World War II, Bremerton played a critical role as a seaport for Allied supplies entering Nazi-occupied Europe through Elliott Bay; its harbor facilitated Operation Neptune's Spear which targeted German submarines during World War II. After America's entry into World War II, military production increased throughout Washington; Bremerton emerged as one of Washington's leading manufacturing centers during that time period. However, economic decline began to take hold beginning in the early 21st century and has persisted since then; although some new housing developments have been built inbremerTON since 2002, most major industrial businesses have left or moved out over the past decade or so. BremerTON is home to several large anchorages including Port Townsend Marina (northwest), Harbor Island Marina (southwest), and Bainbridge Island Marina (south). These ports allow commercial vessels access to Puget Sound while also providing berthing space for larger fishing boats and landing strips for helicopters servicing airfields located along Thurston County south of Vancouver Island
