The Bremerton community has been celebrating military deployments for over seventy years. From World War II to the present day, Bremertonians have donated items and money to support our Armed Forces. Military Deployments are a way for our Armed Forces to come home and leave their mark on our community. They represent everything that is good and right in America, and we thank them every time they are deployed. Military Deployments can be traced back to World War I when the US Navy sent ships into Puget Sound to minesweep during the war. The USS Olympia was sunk by a mine off of Seattle in 1919, but this event sparked the first deployment of Naval Special Warfare forces in Washington Territory when two SEALs were sent into Tacoma to investigate the sinking. In 1942, Oregon became an Imperial Japan ally after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. The Japanese embassy was bombed inBremerton, leading to donations from local residents for military supplies needed by the Army during World War II. In 1945, Bremerton became an American protectorate after Japan surrendered. The city hosted two Moratorium Days following World War II as part of celebrations of freedom and democracy around the world. Since 2001, Bremerton has hostedOperation Blessing which brings together chaplains from various branches of service with individuals who need help recovering from injuries or illness caused by combat or natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina/ Rita or earthquakes such as 9/11/2001 Alaskan Earthquake Relief Fund Deployment Today’s Operation Blessing comes as no surprise; Bremerton is one of several cities across America hosting military deployments each year! In 1865, the town passed into private hands and didn’t gain its own government until 1933 when it became part of the state of Washington. Today, Bremerton is a rural community with a population of around 2,500 people.
