Military gifts have been a part of the Bremerton community for centuries. The Bremerton Naval Militia is one of the oldest and most active naval militia militias in Washington State. TheBremerton Naval Militia Museum has information on military gift history from before World War I to present day. The first military gift ever given to the Bremerton Naval Militia was a rifle from Captain John A. Smith, USNR, on December 6, 1892. It was during the Spanish-American War that USS “Pensacola” received her first military gift, a rifle from HMS “Tamar”. The Navy Department had ordered 167 rifles for use by all branches of service in connection with the war effort. USS “Pensacola” became the first American navy vessel to carry rifles into action against Spain when she fired on Spanish vessels near Havana, Cuba on May 5, 1898. This event is also recognized as National Rifle Association (NRA) Day in Washington State. When World War I began in Europe, many people brought their families along to help support their loved ones who were serving in the armed forces. One breMERTON man who made an impact in military gift history was Jørgen Moe og Harry Kappelund who donated over 7500 items including uniforms and equipment to Bremerton High School during World War I alone! Many other individuals contributed items throughout World War I including Rear Admiral Thomas Condon Jr., Commander First Fleet (1918-1921), Lieutenant Colonel Edward Pogue (USA), and Major General Lewis Biddle Jr.(USA). During World War II there was much growth within the Bremerton Naval Militia due to mobilization efforts led by Admiral Ernest King and Vice Admiral Arthur Wickersham III! As America entered World War II we Preparations were already underway for possible conflict with Nazi Germany! On September 2, 1941 Japan attacked Pearl Harbor making world war II more likely than ever! In response President Franklin D Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9100 which called for all citizens of America to pitch in any type of material they could find that could be used towards national defense! This order helped create what is now known as Operation Crossroads which was responsible for Hundreds of thousands of jobs across America! In honor of this important time period in our community's history we are hosting our own Military Gifting History Exhibition at our museum starting February 3rd through March 3rd!. Our goal is to educate residents about howmilitary gifts have shaped our community and its culture over the years!

It currently resides at The Tank Museum in London. 2) In 1938, President Franklin D. Roosevelt presented General Douglas MacArthur with an automatic rifle - one of only two such weapons ever given away during his lifetime! The other was a sword given to him by King George VI on his visit to America in 1937. It is now on display at The National Archives near Washington D.C.. 3) A replica of HMS Victory - one of Britain's largest warships - was gifted to Australia's Royal Australian Navy in 1954 by Queen Elizabeth II as part of Australia's Defence Review programmes! It is now considered one of Australia's most valuable naval artifacts! 4) In 1987, South Korea received an advanced UH-1 Iroquois helicopter from United States Military Academy at West Point... this helicopter remains controversial because it contains features which could significantly enhances South Korea's defense capabilities against North Korean aggression!
