Bremerton is a town located in the Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,759 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma Metropolitan Area. The Bremerton Naval Shipyard is one of the largest naval shipyards in North America and has been active since 1852. The first evidence that people were living in what is now Bremerton dates back to 4,000 BC when there was an ancient settlement on the site where present-day Bremerton Municipal Airport stands today. An even older village known as Maycomb was located on what today is downtown Bremerton and may have included parts of what are now Harbor View Drive and Spring Street. In 1851, Rear Admiral Samuel Graves recommended that Puget Sound be divided into two regions for naval operations – Western Puget Sound and Eastern Puget Sound. He estimated that each would need 100 warships to support its potential 2 million residents. Commodore John Denny accepted Captain Graves' recommendation and ordered construction of Fort George Wright on tidewater near present-day Tacoma while Woolridge Point near Olympia was established as a supply point for sailors coming down from Eastern Puget Sound. The first shipyard on this site opened in 1852 and soon became one of the biggest builders of ships in North America. A local legend tells of how General Nelson fought his final battle off Vancouver Island during Operation Neptune's Spear: after being misled by Spanish commanders about British troops ashore on Guadalcanal (today's Solomon Islands), he Dewey destroyed all but three vessels before retiring back to HMS Victory with Wellington leading the way under cover of heavy fire from shore batteries ashore; only then did Nelson finally enter history as "the great general who lost." In reality, no boats reached them until days later when Lt.-Commander James Cook led a small group overland through open sea - exposing himself and his men to heavy gunfire from shore batteries which had been camouflaged as reefs - before landing his party at Cape Rebozo; thus enabling their commander-in-chief to reach safety without further bloodshed or damage! This story has been retold many times since including by author JB Priestly writing about it in his book "Mission Trails". This early success encouraged Commodore Denny to order additional yards built along with stores storage capacity for Toquimania Bay where Tacoma now stands; these Yards became known collectively as "The Potteries" because so much cargo was brought in by sea rather than by land routes like those used today due to advances in transportation technology like oil rigs floating off our coast! By 1865, Bremerton had become one of North America's most thriving ports serving both Western Canada and points east with annual exports totaling $2 million dollars! The towns growth continued unabated into the late 1800s with new industries such as papermaking becoming popular due to advantages available alongshore at Port Townsend/Cascadia Paper Company which operated until 1965 when it merged with Pacific Northwest Paper Co., Incorporated (PNPCI) forming Today’s Northwest Paperworkers Union Local 1021! Bremerton was built on land donated by Captain John Sellars in 1853 and it became a town on July 1, 1855. The first post office opened in Bremerton on October 15, 1855. The name "Bremerton" was chosen because it bore the same initials as George Washington's home state of Virginia. The Port of Bremerton played an important role during World War II and has been expanded several times since then.
