Bremerton is a town in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bremerton–Olympia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Bremerton" comes from the German word "Bremen," meaning "place of ships." The first permanent settler in what would become Bremerton was Nicholas Goodrich on December 21, 1856. Goodrich and his family were pioneers in organized agriculture in what became Kitsap County. In 1860, John Pecos bought title to land that would later become Bremerton from Nicholas Goodrich. In 1865, when Puget Sound Railway arrived in Kitsap County and began construction of its line from Seattle to Olympia, Pecos donated land east of his home for a railroad station and named it Bremerton after himself and his new home's location on Bainbridge Island within the sound of Puget Sound. In 1872, local merchant Augustus Deuel established himself as a transportation entrepreneur with the creation of the Pacific Mail Route between Tacoma and Olympia using steamboats sailing up Puget Sound on Lake Union. By 1900 Deuel had built over fifty passenger vessels operating over three thousand miles carrying mail throughout northwestern America routing via Tacoma-Seattle-Olympia-Kitsap County During World War II many small businesses closed due to wartime rationing but Big Sky Boats resumed shipping long distance cargo soon after hostilities ended The median household income for working households was $761 in 2000; this increased to $971 by 2004; however it has since decreased slightly over this time period As one might expect during times of economic decline there is an increase in crime rates although this has not been consistently consistent across years or decades
