The first permanent settler in what is now Bremerton was James Cook who landed his ship "Endeavor" on September 20th, 1808 from Botany Bay in present-day Victoria, British Columbia. He named the settlement after himself and it became known as Cooktown. The first post office was established in 1811 and was called Endeavor Post Office until 1826 when it changed toBremerton. In 1886 a large millinery company by the name of Singer Brothers opened a factory on Third Avenue in downtown Bremerton which produced fabrics such as dresses, blouses and overalls for many years before it closed its doors in 1973. A small current shopping center called Singer Square has replaced most of the older buildings since then but some original Singer Factory remains including a visitor's center that open during summertime to showcase memorabilia from the factory floor. In 1907 Bremerton had 1 grocery store, 2 general stores/ notions stores, 4 dry goods stores (including one founded by George Wirtz), 3 carpenters shops (except one operated by J P White), 2 blacksmiths shops (except one operated by John C Beall), 1 harness shop (operated by H & S Morse) and 9 other small businesses generating $2 million worth of economic activity according to local historian Don Freeman . By 1910 there were 11 businesses with payrolls above $100 each employing over 200 people making Bremerton one of Washington's largest cities with over 12,000 residents working inside or outside the city limits.. Thereafter rapid growth occurred due to annexation of neighboring communities including North Kitsap School District #1 which included much development along Third Avenue southward into what are now neighborhoods like Des Moines Landing and Yesler Heights while also annexing eastern portions of South Kitsap School District #2 bringing more than 6500 residents within city limits between 1911-1920; these annexations helped spur further growth not only inside town boundaries but into adjoining neighborhoods too where houses were built at high prices because land there had been recently reserved for future streetcar lines connecting Tacoma via Southcenter Mall with Seattle’s Downtown core thereby creating an ever growing “inner city” effect throughout much of Pierce County In 1930 both school districts were combined forming North Kitsap School District #1 with 7600 students primarily living within city limits but annexed adjacent portions of South Kitsap School District #2 bringing nearly 1500 residents within city limits; this two school district merger created another inner-city neighborhood effect throughout Pierce County makingBremertion today’s second largest city once again surpassing Tacoma
