On January 1, 1896, Bremerton became an incorporated town with a mayor and city council. On February 5th of that year it merged with Unincorporated settlements located to its south including Kit Carson to form what would become known as the "BremerTONe" mega-city or Tri-Cities Area which had a population of over 100,000 people by 2000 according to some sources; however this figure has been revised down to around 60,000 residents today based on updated Census data from 2011 onwards. It is interesting to note that since incorporation there have only been two mayors - Charles Wickersham Howe (1996-2001) and Ed Murray (2009-2013). There are currently three members on the City Council: Patty Milligan (District 2), Kshama Sawant (District 7), and Bruce Harrell (District 8). The current mayor is Shawn Nelson who served from November 10th through December 12th of this year after being elected via District 2 election held on October 24th. In addition to Nelson there are also four other members on the City Council - Courtney Springett (District 3), Debora Edmonds (District 4), Tina Kotzke(District 5), and Laura Nunez(District 6). Unlike most municipalities where mayoral elections happen every two years these elections take place biennially so that all citizens have an opportunity to vote for their representative on matters concerning city government regardless of whether they live within district boundaries or not! This system has made for more open discussion amongst councillors about how best our municipality can be run while still maintaining its unique character as well as providing opportunities for different perspectives to be heard early in proceedings so that decisions can be made democratically rather than hastily or without full knowledge/consultation
