In 1835, when Congress created King County, Washington, part of it included land east of Seattle that became Burien. The town's name may have been selected because it was one mile wide by one mile long at its widest point and located on a high bluff overlooking Puget Sound. The post office was established in 1838, and by 1860 had become an important center for logging and fishing on Puget Sound. By 1870, Burien had a population of 1,400 people and developed into an agricultural community with buildings made from logs found along the Burrard Inlet running through downtown. during World War II many local businesses closed as war production increased but some reopened after the war ended; such as Talbot’s grocery store which still operates today
