Burien is a small town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,495 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area and lies on the eastern border of Burien with Kent. The first settlers in what would become Burien were farmers who came to the area in 1853. A post office was established here in 1857, and by 1861 it had a population of 20 residents. The land that now makes up Burien was first used for agricultural purposes, but by 1870 it had also been purchased by Dr. George Parkman as his farmstead called "Parker's Point". In 1872, Dr. Parkman donated land to the city of Seattle for a public school system; this donation made Burien one of the few areas within Seattle where public education was available from earliest childhood until later adolescence. In 1886, John Denny organized the townships within King County and named them after himself (Denny Township), his father (Garland Township), and two friends (Hanson Township) – alluding to their previous contributions to local government through their ownership or control of property therein. In 1907 when King County became an independent state, much of its territory lay outside ofSeattle limits; as a result, parts of both King County and Seattle were annexed into new counties while Burien remained unincorporated. One year later, City Council member George expansions Richter Boulevard eastward from Intersection Street which ran near today's Navy Yard shopping center south-southwest corner adjacent to Olympia Fields Elementary School - thus creating what is now known as Richardson Road/Intersection Street intersection which served as downtown business district boundaries expanding northward beyond Intersection Street boundary defining today's Ballard neighborhood northeast boundary extending northwest past Federal Way neighborhood serving today's Husky dealership parking lotbordering Elliott Bay housing development across Elliott Bay from University Place naval shipyardsnest & associated buildings including Knewt Marine Company dockyards located at Harborview Naval Baseseaward sideof Puget Sound facing towards Mount Baker mountainrange extends alongshoreline beginning at Wasilla Lake & terminating at Arlington Heights neighborhood southeast boundary following Snelling Creek south shoreline continuing alongshoreline until reaching Elliottbay Community Pier
There are quite a few armies which have deployed gift histories, both during and after World War II. The United States Army was no exception; their Gift History records show that from 1941 to 1945 they bestowed gifts on various members of the military. The first deployment for the US Army was in 1941 when they sent troops to fight in World War II. After they returned home, they began to send large numbers of gifts back to their units and friends. This included items like radios, clothing, artillery pieces and tanks. Gifts were also given as thank-you's for good service or just general goodwill. During the Cold War, many armies developed different Gift History albums in order to remember and reflect on past deployments and relationships with their comrades within the military. Many countries participated in this type of album, including Great Britain and West Germany’s Bundeswehr (the German Armed Forces). Burien is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,562 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The first permanent European settler in what is now Burien was John Smeaton in 1851. He named his land "Burien" after British Columbia city of Burnaby. The first post office in the town was established in 1853 and it remained open until 1907. In 1865, John Wesley Smith built the first frame home in what is now Burien and named it after himself, which he called "Wesley's Home". The first store opened on Main Street in Burien on October 25th 1865 by Wm Haggerty and Fenton Ebright with $640 worth of merchandise from Tacoma. The community grew rapidly due to its location near Puget Sound and access to trains that brought goods into the town from all over Seattle. By 1870, there were 10 stores and 50 residents. At that time, Burien had a school, church (First Baptist), post office (1865 - 1907), hotel (1870 - 1911), fire department (1871 - 1903), telephone company (1900 - 1913) and two banks- First National Bank & Trust Company and Western Union Telegraph Company- which helped make it one of the most developed communities within King County during this time period. In 1907, when Burrard Avenue was widened as part of an extensive highway improvement project across King County, much of what is now Burien became available for development including much of the lower portion of State Route 99B between Ballard Bridge Road south to Oriole Way east as well as portions of State Route 520 between Meridian Drive north to Pacific Highway east. This greatly increased activity along Burrard Avenue which soon became known as "The Boulevard". On November 15th 1907 burrien incorporation took place under state law with 20 homes being organized into a single 2-block long street with Main Street continuing as an alley leading to each house side for traffic circulation purposes only In 1916 when KING TV station moved from Seattle to Olympia both City limits merged creating one large city government with direct jurisdiction over all businesses within its borders
In 1881, the city of Burien was founded by local farmers. The town grew rapidly in the early years, and in 1894 it incorporated as a municipality. In 1921, Burien became an annexe of the City of Seattle.
