Burien, Washington is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,873 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of King County. Burien was founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1892 and incorporated as a town on January 1, 1909. It was named after nearby Burien Lake. Burien's economy depends on services provided by county government and private businesses. The city has a small police force and no fire department; residents must rely upon their own resources to protect themselves from emergencies or accidents. The primary source of income for most Burien citizens comes from sales jobs in the local agricultural industry; other sources include recreation, education, and tourism. The first European settler in what is now King County was Nils Christensen who arrived in 1852 with his family from Norway. Burien is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 9,818 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. Burien is bordered by SeaTac to the north and east, Bellevue to the south and west, Everett to the northwest, and Issaquah to the southeast. The first European settlers in present-day Washington were Scottish immigrants who arrived in 1792 during Queen Victoria's reign as captain of HMS Discovery when she explored what is now Puget Sound. They named their new land after a place called Benalla on the banks of River Tweed in Scotland. In 1855, British Columbia became part of Canada and so no longer had any legal connection with Scotland; thus Benalla became part of Washington Territory (along with nearby Lake Stevens). The name "Burien" was chosen for its similarity to that of Benalla and it has been spelled this way ever since. The townsite that would later become Burien was laid out at an intersection of two roads known then as Puyallup Road and Southworth Road near present-day SeaTac Airport. On March 1, 1887, Burien incorporated as a town under state law No. 5753 authorized by Territorial Legislature No. 3rd Session Februar y 4th (1886). At that time there were only 7 residents living in Burien; 2 men serving terms as trustees: Jno Burtis (who served until 1888) & Henery Griggs (who served until 1893). On October 15, 1896 Burien voted to become an independent city under state law No 6052 which granted city status from King County Voluntary Municipal Association #1 Incorporation July 24th 1895 effective November 1st same year by virtue of Act 506th Leg., chs 2 & 3 (Washington State Constitution 1907).
