Burien is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 17,581 at the 2010 census. Burien is part of the Seattle–Tacoma Metropolitan Area. It is located on the north shore of Lake Union and is adjacent to Bellevue and Issaquah on the east side of the lake. The first Europeans to visit what became Burien were sea captains who charted its location in 1825 while exploring Puget Sound. In 1909, Burien was incorporated as a town within King County. The lakeside communities of Westport and Marshfield developed around Burien's naval base during World War II thanks to military contracts from Boeing and other companies that built ships there. After the war, Boeing stopped making ships at their Dahlgren shipyards in Tacoma but kept Burien open until 1988 when it closed its doors for good due to heavy local competition from Microsoft's Redmond site which had been opened just four years earlier. Today, much of what used to be Naval Base property has been redeveloped into mixed-use neighborhoods with office, retail, and housing developments nearby; these include North Park (just east of I-5), South Park (southwest of I-5), Olympic Village (northwest of I-5), and Burke Square (northwest near downtown). Burien, Washington is a census-designated place in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The first white settler in what is now Burien was George Stephenson in 1853. He named his land "Island Park." In 1887, Territorial Land Commissioner James Irvine purchased from Stephenson a tract of . The land extended from present-day Burien to unincorporated areas east of Seattle and south of Tacoma. In 1912, when Puget Sound Bridge Company constructed the first road through what is now Burien on then-owned land between Olympia and Everett, it caused much traffic congestion because people were traveling to and fromSeattle as well as inside the county. To alleviate this problem, King County Commissioners authorized the creation of a new city by vote in 1915 known as "Burien" after Captain John Cushing's lieutenant colonel's name for an uninhabited island near Seattle that had been leased by commissioners for $1 per acre (the same amount that would be paid for today's parcel of ). The City Council voted 3-2 to accept incorporation on July 2nd; Mayor Denny Thomas presided over incorporation ceremonies on July 12th. The original population estimate for Burien was 100; however due to high growth rates throughout King County during World War II (due largely to military housing developments), the population increased rapidly until it reached 1,200 by 1950 with an estimated 17% growth rate each decade thereafter! At its peak in 1960, Burien employed over 200 workers including 50% women! The city experienced rapid decline starting around 1970s due primarily to competition from neighboring Redmond which had received statehood two years earlier and began developing into a major metropolis with large annexed properties adjacent to Burien; however some pockets of vibrant entrepreneurship persisted until eventually being absorbed into Redmond too late for many residents who moved away during that time period. It has since seen modest growth again while maintaining its close community spirit although there are currently no plans or hope underway at any level consistent with long term development beyond property annexation/property values increase via annexation/recession cycles without locally elected representation or direct access thereto
