Burien is a small town located in King County, Washington. The population was 3,845 at the 2010 census. It is the home of Burien Air Force Base and the headquarters for SpaceLink Communications Holdings. The town was founded in 1907 by John C. Burroughs as a farmstead on the banks of the Skagit River. In 1912, Burroughs donated land to the city of Seattle for its airport expansion project, which included building an airfield on what is now Burien's main square. The first flights from Seattle-Bellevue Airport were made using this airfield in 1924. In 1941, when Japanese forces invaded America and occupied Pearl Harbor, President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered American forces to open fire on Japanese naval vessels attempting to enter American waters northeast of Hawaii. After World War II ended, Burien became part of Washington state; it remained an agricultural center until post-war population growth caused it to become one of King County's most populous towns by 1950.
