Burien is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Burien was Captain George Vancouver on his HMS Discovery in 1792. He named it Point Defiance after the British Columbia Coast guard ship that had brought him there. A post office called "Burien" was established in 1851, and remained in operation until 1959. In 1907, Puget Sound Bridge Company built the present day Burien- Spanning Road bridge over Puget Sound between Burien and Olympia as a project to improve transportation opportunities for residents of both towns. The bridge remains operational today as an important link between these two communities. I n 1912, John Condon developed land around what is now Northlake Boulevard and Third Avenue NW which became known as Intersection Parkland after being dedicated by then-Mayor Harry Seiler during his first term in office. This development eventually led to the name "Burien". In 1954 Intersection Parkland was annexed by King County and became home to many of its government buildings including Sheriff's Department Headquarters and Justice Courts Building; county jail; probate court; social services building (today's Senior Center); health department building (now Queen Anne Elementary School); fire station No. 2 (now Nordstrom Place Shopping Center); and many other smaller detached homes/residential areas which remain today withinIntersection Parkland boundaries
