The Navy has a long and proud history in Burien, Washington. The first Naval Base was established here in 1909, and the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard was built here in 1915. However, as naval operations became more important in America’s early republic, so too did gifts from shipowners and other interested individuals. From 1775 until 1815, members of Congress received a total of $1,781 worth of gifts from merchant sailors and others within the Navy Department. This number does not include Gifts given by individual Sailors during periods such as World War II or Korea. In all, over 100 different Naval officers have given gifts to U.S. legislators since 1775! Many gifts were practicalidemnts- for example clothing or books- but also included items such as rare stamps or coins. One particular gift that has been particularly well remembered is an Admiral’s Hat (1799). This hat was presented to then-Secretary of State John Adams by Rear Admiral Nicholas Johnson on November 13th, 1799. The hat was made from a woolen fabric with blue stripes running down its sides and a green cockade on top - similar in design to Howe’s national emblem worn by American warships at this time. It is thought that Adams may have gotten it as a present for his wife? TheHat has continued to be used by members of Congress ever since and can currently be found used online at auctions including Amazon! Another interesting naval gift is an oak plaque honoring Commodore James Cook (1768-1835). This plaque was gifted to Commodore Matthew Perry on October 10th, 1819 by Rear Admiral David Dixon Porterfield USN(Retd) - Commander in Chief United States Pacific Fleet at that time! Perry had met Cook while leading HMS Discovery Expedition into Japan Bay in 1809/10 during what was known as Perry’s “Mission Without Porto Rico” expedition!!! It is likely that this plaque was given in commemoration of Cook's visit to Japan some years earlier when he explored Tokugawa Ieyasu's holdings around Kyushu!! Interestingly enough much remains about this vessel still today; for example her original cannons still firing!

Burien, Washington is a town located in Kitsap County, Washington. The population was 2,711 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Kitsap County. Burien was founded by Elisha Kane and others in 1855 as a trading post on Puget Sound. The name "Burien" means "place of salmon." The town's first store and post office were both built in1855. In 1872, Burien incorporated as a city under the name Seattle. AfterSeattle's incorporation, its citizens voted to change the name to Burien in honor of their original settlement site on Puget Sound. In 1907, when King County became organized, Burien became its capital and remained so until 1959 when Tacoma took over that role. In 1979 John Fife became the first Mayor of Burien and held that position until his death in 2003; he had served twice before becoming mayor but never served as long as City Manager (the current title). On May 1st, 2002 the City Council approved ordinance #2 which established a new city government for Burien with an elected Mayor and City Council comprising 9 members instead of 7 members currently allowed under city charter. On October 6th 2003 Mayor John Fife passed away after a long illness leaving office with 4 years remaining on his term
