In 1847, ferry passengers travelling from Seattle to Olympia had to disembark at Ferry Point because boats couldn't pass through Strait of Juan de Fuca due to heavy snowpack conditions; this led to the naming of Strait of Juan de Fuca after him in honor of his discovery.
