Its streets are named after Puget Sound townsites: Burien Road, North Burien Road, South Burien Road, and Westminster Avenue. The first European to see what is now Burien was Capt. George Vancouver on July 14th 1792 while exploring the Strait of Juan de Fuca coastline between British Columbia and Oregon during his Third Resolution Expedition. He named it Point Defiance after Vice Admiral David Stuart who thought he would sight land from sea that day near Point Defiance Inlet before continuing his voyage up the coast towards Seattle. The first white settler in what is now Burien was Elias Goodrich who arrived with his family in 1847 from Olympia, Washington Territory. The first post office in what is now Burien was established on May 5th 1853 as Lester Prairie post office under territorial jurisdiction of Tacoma; it later became part of King County when that county was organized on February 3rd 1881 (). The first store opened in what is now Burien by Wm Henson on October 25th 1889 (). In 1944 the U.S. government built an airfield for Boeing at Nellis Air Force Base which served as a training ground for bomber crews during World War II; this contributed to increased development around the airport over time including several thousand homes and businesses being erected adjacent to it resulting in one of the most vibrant commercial areas outside of Seattle or Tacoma). Today much of Nellis AFB' perimeter includes parkland as well as some residential neighborhoods with access to shopping centers and other nearby amenities like schools and hospitals

It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area and has a land area of just over square miles. The first permanent settler in what is now Burien was George Vancouver in 1836. In 1889 Burien became an incorporated municipality and by 2005 had a population of 5,592 people living in 707 housing units. The town began as a small hamlet on Puget Sound until it grew to become one of the most significant commercial areas on Orcas Island during the early 19th century when shipbuilding became an important industry on that peninsula. The town's growth was assisted by several railroad companies which constructed terminals there including the Seattle- Tacoma Railway (ST) and Seattle and Walla Walla Railroad (SWR). By 1907, Burien had become an incorporated municipality with a population of 3,500 people. During World War II, much of the local economy was centered around shipbuilding and wartime production helped contribute to Burien's rapid growth through 1945 when it reached its peak with 6,000 residents. However after 1945 the economyaned rapidly due to declining shipyards employment as well as retail development which replaced shipbuilding jobs throughout most of Northwest Washington during this time period
