The United States Army was founded in 1775 as a military force to protect the country from invasion. The army grew over time and by 1812, it had reached its current size of over 630,000 men. The army has played an important role in American history both during and after World War II. In Des Moines, Washington, the army garrisoned a post on the site of present-day Fort Lapp during the late 1800s and early 1900s. As part of the Army's effort to modernize its forces, it purchased land near Des Moines in 1902 for $1 million. The new post was named Fort Lapp after General John A. Logan, who had commanded Ulysses S. Grant's Union forces at Spotsylvania Court House in Virginia during the war that ended with Lincoln's death four years earlier. Fort Lapp served as an important center for military training and operations throughout Iowa until 1946 when it was disbanded due to budget cuts caused by World War II. Today, however, Fort Lapp is still open to the public and is used as a museum complex which features exhibits about American military history.

The Des Moines, Washington Army National Guard unit was first organized on December 16, 1917 in response to the Spanish-American War. The unit was redesignated the 5th Infantry Regiment on November 3, 1922. On October 21, 1938 the regiment was again redesignated as the 8th Infantry Regiment and activated at Fort Lewis with orders to serve in World War II. The regiment served in combat from December 1941 until May 1945. After war ended the regiment was demobilized on September 15, 1945 and disbanded.

The modern army gift history begins with the American Civil War. This conflict was fought between the Confederate States of America, led by southern slaveowners, and the Union states, led by northern freeholders. In 1865, following the victory of General Ulysses S. Grant over Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House, the Union victorious took control of all of Virginia and most of Maryland (including Prince George’s County), while the Confederacy fell apart. The United States Army became a fullyfledged military force for the first time in its history.
Des Moines is a city in Polk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 298 at the 2010 census. It was founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1847 and named for Des Moines River. The city was incorporated as a municipality in 1871. The current mayor is Linda McMahon. The first permanent settlers arrived in what is now Polk County on August 29, 1847, when farmer Ole Christian Sørensen and his family set up camp near present-day Des Moines on the confluence of the Des Moines and Mississippi Rivers. By 1850, about 150 people had settled around what is now Des Moines proper. In 1851, the Iowa General Assembly passed an act creating a township within Polk County to serve as "a nucleus around which other settlements might grow." On January 24 of that year, John Aiken purchased 160 acres (61 ha) of land just east of present-day Des Moines from Jesse Dodge for $100 cash plus 10% interest. He established what became known as Aiken's Forest Resort – the first forest west of the Appalachian Mountains – and began to sell lumber to settlers throughout Iowa and Illinois. Aiken's resort attracted attention from investors who wanted to build infrastructures such as railroads adjacent to its trees; this development led to rapid growth in Aiken's resort over time. In 1865, Aiken sold additional acreage south of present-day Des Moines for $1,000 cash plus free passage on any future railways he built thereabouts! This purchase created much speculation among early settler groups about whether or not they would be able to reach Fort Worth through their journey across Indian Territory; however nothing came of it because no railway ever materialized out of these plans). In 1870–71, Mayor John Wickersham erected a frame courthouse and jail on Main Street in downtown Des Moines opposite Presentation Cathedral (now First Baptist Church). This building served as City Hall until 1907 when a new brick courthouse was erected on Third Avenue between Vine and Walnut Streets near today’s University District Library. From this building until graduating into its own municipality in 1871 (the same year that it gained water power), Davenport had been serving as our second city center after Council Bluffs (then spelled Council Grove). This long period during which Davenport functioned primarily as an unincorporated village can be summed up with two words: Progressivism! The townspeople were determined to make their community one step aheadofCouncil Bluffs even though they lacked many important amenities such as sewerage & streetlights yet! This determination paid off eventually with their establishment of their own fire department & library in 1907 followed by annexation by Davenport making it our third city center following Council Grove & Davenport proper! Today we commemorate this progressivism via our annual parade downtown each September called “The Pride Of The Village”

The original town site was located near present-day Centralia and White City. The first post office in the city was established in 1854. In 1855, the city became a stop on the Oregon and Pacific Railroad. The railroad helped to create a boom in the city during the 1850s and 1860s. In 1865, Des Moines became an independent municipality. It had a population of just over 100 people when it attained municipal status. The population increased to 1,500 by 1870. By 1890, Des Moines had grown to 3 square miles (10 km2). During that time, it also developed as a center for cattle ranching and grain farming.
