Des Moines, Washington is a city located in the The Great Northwest region of the United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 509. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area and it is located on the Iowa River. Many parents chose to move their children out of state because they could not afford to lose them forever – but some decided to keep their children close by as they awaited word on whether slavery would be repealed or not. Those who remained behind eventually formed two schools district: One near downtown (now First National Bank) and another southeast of town (later Waukee High School).
