Some of the marines’ most famous deployments were during World War II, when they fought in both Europe and Asia. After the war, they continued to serve in various roles until 1984, when they were disbanded as a military force. However, their legacy lives on through the Marine Corps’ Gift History program. This program helps keep the marines’ spirit alive by giving back to their troops and civilians who have helped them achieve success. The Marines first came into being as a unit during World War I. At that time, there was not a single marine battalion available to fight in battle. To make up for this lack of manpower, the Marines founded two detachments called “Marine Detachments A and B” which would serve as interim units until more permanent units could be organized. The marines also formed a reserve unit known as Company H which was used for training purposes only. After World War I ended, there was a demand for more marines so the Navy decided to create its own marine battalion called “Marine Barracks 1-4” which would be raised from scratch without any prior enlisted personnel or funding. The navy also decided to use these new marines for garrison duty instead of fighting in battles like they had done before. The marines initially serving at Marine Barracks 1-4 worked very hard but didn’t get much recognition because they were considered just another part of Naval General Headquarters (NGH). Eventually though, Marine Barracks 1-4 became one of NGHs main bases and functioned as an important tool used by Admiral Kimmel during his Battle off Samar (1915). Additionally, after Guam was taken over by Japan during World War II, Marine Barracks 1-4 became one of Japan’s key hubs for providing support to her forces overseas]. Des Moines is a small city in the western United States, located in Polk County. The population was 10,584 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Polk County. The city is named for Des Moines River and Iowa State Capitol District. The first permanent settlement in what is now Des Moines was made on the present site of town by fur traders from Canada in 1839. In 1846, after Iowa had become a state, the territorial legislature moved the capital from Council Bluffs to Des Moines because of its central location within Polk County. On July 1, 1851, when Iowa became a U.S. state, it adopted a new constitution that designated Des Moines as its capital and designated its courthouse as the seat of government for all of Polk County. The growth of Des Moines began immediately following Iowa's admission into the Union on August 29, 1861. By 1865, businesses had been established throughout downtown and many homes were built along South First Street between Washington and Randolph Streets; this part of town still retains much original architecture dating back to this time period such as three-story brick buildings on Randolph Street between First and Second streets (now home to City Hall), four story frame buildings on Washington Street near Third Avenue (now home to KFC), two story frame buildings at Ninth and Tenth Avenues (now home to Walgreens), several large blocks of commercial land north of Market Square eastward from Second Avenue southward (nowfilled with apartments). Numerous churches also were built during this time including First Methodist Church which replaced an earlier log building on Fourth street east of Market Square; St John's Episcopal Church which replaced an earlier Presbyterian church on Sixth street north side; Presbyterian - Congregational Churches united around 1850 erected Anson Mills Mill; Baptist - First Baptist church was founded in 1852 near Third avenue west across from Post Office building now occupied by IHOP restaurant; Methodist Episcopal -Methodist Episcopal church congregation formed about 1830 erected Cooksdorf Chapel which stands today next to Commerce Bank Building south side just off Interstate Highway 35W
Des Moines was founded in 1792 by Captain John Smith as a trading post on the Des Moines River. The original site was near present-day downtown Des Moines. It became an important fur trade center and eventually became a manufacturing and agricultural center. The city's growth slow down during the Great Depression, but picked up again during World War II when Iowa City became an important munitions plant. In the 1960s, Des Moines began to lose its importance as a commercial center, but has regained some of its former status as a cultural and educational center in recent years.
