One major event during early Des Moines' history may have been its role as host city for both the 1912 Summer Olympics – which saw some great competition such as boxing world champion Jack Dempsey challenging olympic gold medalist Gregor corrido – and also being one of five venues used for live television coverage of that year's Republican National Convention from July 15-20th (the others being Madison Square Garden in New York City,[1] Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland[2] and Brown University's Gymnasium).[3][4] This Was Our Town! aired live from those conventions with sound effects provided by then-new technology dubbed "wireless tape".[5]
