The history of the National Guard in Des Moines, Washington goes back to 1876. The first organization chartered in this town was the Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment which was organized on November 11th, 1876. It marked the beginning of a long and proud tradition of military service for the citizens of Des Moines. In 1916, the National Guard was re-designated as the Army National Guard and it continued its tradition of service to society through numerous events and activities. In 1941, with World War II happening around the world, Des Moines natives mobilized their community with both local patriotism and military service by forming two companies (the 111th Cavalry Regiment and Company C) into what would become known as The Big Red One. After years of hard work and dedication by these brave men/women, they were able to return home after WWII with an honorable record. Today, there are more than 5,000 members in the National Guard in Des Moines thanks to our continuous recruitment efforts. Our units include everything from combat units such as cavalry Regiment 111C & Co., infantry battalion I&II (currently stationed at Fort Riley), artillery unit AIF-7A & Co., support services unit SSU-1B (located at University Of Iowa Hospitals), Search And Rescue Unit SRU-5A &Co., police department PIO squadron PC-5D (located at Northwest Mutual Insurance Company building), Department Of Homeland Security team DHSG-2B (located across street from Iowa State Fairgrounds) - all serving our community while upholding American values through law enforcement activity or emergency response. Des Moines, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 7,852 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Des Moines" comes from the Iowa Tribe of Native Americans and has been used by them since at least 1855. The first white settlers in this area were the Hardin brothers who arrived in 1847. They founded what became Des Moines Township on the east side of the Missouri River and named it after their home state of Iowa. In 1859, James Gray purchased all of present-day Polk County from French Canadian farmers for $10,000 and renamed it Polk County after himself as a way to show his support for Kansas independence movement leader John Brown. This action helped spur more residents to move into this area and development began soon afterwards with several stores opening up along State Street between Belmont Avenue and Illinois Avenue (now US Highway 31). A post office was established at Des Moines in 1868, and a school was built in 1870 which served as the nucleus for what would become Des Moines Public Schools District #2 today. In 1888 La Crosse Woolen Mill caught fire leaving an estimated $200 damage while being operated by locals; this event led to stricter regulations on flour mills throughout America which would ultimately lead to its demise around 1930s when larger mills took over much of these operations. The community's only store closed its doors in 1984 however; local businesses have gradually replaced it with new stores starting up throughout downtownDes Moines since then making it one of the most active commercial areas within city limits today! The city's growth came about through annexation of adjacent municipalities, including West Des Moines and East Dubuque. As of 2010, there are an estimated 97 neighborhoods within Des Moines proper (including those annexed from other towns), plus an additional 30 neighborhoods surrounding it on either side of Interstate 35W. These Urbana-Champaign areas make up portions of two large metropolitan statistical areas: the Twin Cities–St Paul MSA and Minneapolis–Duluth MSA
