Des Moines, Washington is a city in the United States located in Des Moines County. The population was 43,801 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Des Moines County. The city is located on the Des Moines River and has a humid subtropical climate. The first European to visit what is now Des Moines was French fur trader Pierre-Jacques Marquette in 1679. He saw a Shawnee village on the present site of downtown and thought it looked like an Indian burial ground he had seen when hunting with his French friends near Quebec City. In 1795, Captain James Krieger traveled up the Iowa River and down its course to present day Sioux City before returning eastward along the Missouri River in search of new land for America. On July 4, 1836, President Andrew Jackson signed legislation creating Iowa Territory which included all of north central Minnesota as well as most of west Texas and parts of California; this area became part of Oklahoma Territory after that state was organized into states in 1907. On November 3, 1851, voters in Vandalia Township approved incorporation as a city by ordinance with a population of just 6 people; however, due to low property values and lack thereof public funding for city services such as streetlights or sewers, Main Street only served as an open-air market during certain hours from about 1870 until it closed around 1920 due to budgetary shortfalls caused by high turnover rates within businesses not meeting code requirements for trash collection or stormwater discharge control measures; other than that main thoroughfare remained virtually unchanged from its early days until quite recent times (in fact many Main Streets across North America still use older name streets rather than their current numbering).
