Des Moines, Washington is a small town in the US state of Washington. The population was 5,009 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–Greeley, IA-KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town began as a post office in 1881 and has grown to include a shopping mall, churches, schools, and businesses. The economy is based on agriculture and tourism. The first people to settle in this area were farmers who started trading with Native Americans. In 1847 they built what is now called "the first white settlement" in present-day Des Moines Township when they moved fromIowa City to build a new fur trading post. Over time other settlers arrived including Russians and Mexicans before becoming United States citizens in 1902. In 1907 Des Moines Township was organized into its own government which included three villages: Northfield, South Sioux City and Waterloo (now Waukee). These villages became self-governing until 1959 when Des Moines Township was merged into Iowa City through an act of the Iowa Legislature. Northfield Village continued to operate as an independent village until it withdrew from government service in 1961; South Sioux City ceased operations in 1971; and Waterloo closed its doors for good in 1984 after serving as the capital of Polk County since its incorporation into Iowa City eleven years earlier than any other community within that county.. South Sioux City continued to exist commercially until it closed its doors for good on December 4th 2008 due to financial troubles caused by overspending on programs that did not result in increased sales or economic growth.. Waterloo reopened as an open-air museum on October 6th 2009 following many renovations which included moving of most of the original building materials back more than 100 years ago! The museum features exhibits about early American life including descriptions of what Indian Chief Standing Rock wore during his visits!
